基本上,這些環境荷爾蒙主要經由兩種途徑進入人體:食物途徑與容器途徑 [1]。「食物途徑」是含有該化學物質的產品在完成任務後,沒有被妥善回收,成為污染物而進入環境,經由農業或漁業中的生物吸收,最後進入食物中。舉例來說,「汞」最常見的接觸來源就是由大型魚類生物累積而來,而戴奧辛容易累積在脂肪、乳製品中。另外,「容器途徑」通常源於錯誤使用食物容器,以塑膠材質的餐具為例,若溫度太高或是磨損後持續使用,就極易吸收到雙酚 A 或是塑化劑 [2]。換句話說,若沒有刻意去挑戰盛裝容器的「極限」,挑選符合標準、經認證的產品,並遵守使用規範,因為此途徑而接觸到環境荷爾蒙的風險便很低。
