植物生長難免會有枯枝落葉,這些東西在地表逐漸分解,都變成供應土壤微生物的養份。2015 年在美國懷俄明州的研究就發現,少了草食動物啃食的草地土壤裡,細菌真菌的數量比較多,而且分解植物纖維素木質素的基因、呼吸和分解含氮化合物的基因都比較多(Peschel et al. 2015)。好像動物多吃兩口,就會讓微生物們縮衣節食了。
