Ann Graybiel 教授為MIT McGovern Institute知名的神經科學家,2001年獲頒美國國家科學獎章(National Medal of Science,美國頒給科學家的最高榮譽),研究重心為腦部基底核的神經生理學,研究人們的習慣性行為。
Ann Graybiel於去年十月發表於Nature的文獻指出,當習慣養成後,在腦部基底核(basal ganglia)會形成特定的神經活性模式,習慣打破,神經模式隨之改變,不過一旦舊態復萌,原神經模式即刻重現。腦部基底核與習慣、沈溺與過程學習有密切關係,帕金森氏症(Parkinson’s disease)、妄想強迫症(Obsessive compulsive disorder,OCD)與其他神經精神異常(neuropsychiatric disorders)病患的腦部基底核有異常現象。
Ann Graybiel訓練老鼠在迷宮裡尋找巧克力片,巧克力片放在T型迷宮的末端,只要刺激聲音響起,即讓老鼠開始找食物,同時以微小的電極紀錄其腦部電性反應,顯示腦部細胞間關聯性的神經模式。於實驗當中,老鼠知道終點有美味獎賞,所以在迷宮裡找尋獎賞時,神經細胞一直處於活化狀態。當老鼠領悟到刺激聲音與巧克力片有關聯性時,腦部基底核的神經細胞也完成了學習。
