搞笑諾貝爾獎公共衛生獎頒給格陵蘭努克(Nuuk)的愛倫.克萊斯特(Ellen Kleist)與挪威奧斯陸的哈洛得.摩伊(Harald Moi),他們以深具警惕作用的醫學報告〈經由充氣娃娃造成的淋病傳染途徑〉(Transmission of Gonorrhea Through an Inflatable Doll)獲獎。
在現代的醫學院與護理學院的課程裡,充氣娃娃頂多只會被一筆帶過,很少有醫學教科書願意多花篇幅討論這個主題。醫學文獻裡確實包含了一些蠻有趣的研究報告,像是:《波士頓地區專科醫生對解剖用人型娃娃的利用》(Use of AnatomicalDolls by Boston-Area Professionals,一九九二年),《得癡呆症的嬰兒娃娃》(Baby Dolls in Dementia,一九九○年),《解剖用人型娃娃的外生殖器是否不夠逼真?》(Are the Genitalia of Anatomical DollsDistorted?,一九九○年);有挑釁意味的《照真實人體修正人型娃娃:研究VS臨床實務》(Anatomically Correct Dolls: Research vs. ClinicalPractice,一九八八年);以及這份來搗亂的眼科醫學報告《一個引誘洋娃娃眼珠上下動作的花招》(A Maneuver to Elicit VerticalDolls’ Eye Movements,一九七九年)。不過對於摩伊醫生與克萊斯特護士所要處理的這個病例,沒有一份報告可以提供任何參考。
不管是大型電腦或個人電腦都需具有「中央處理單元」(central process unit,簡稱 CPU)。CPU 是電腦的「腦」,其電子電路負責處理所有軟體正確運作所需的所有任務,如算術、邏輯、控制、輸入和輸出操作等等。雖然早期的設計即可以讓一個指令同時做兩、三件不同的工作;但為了簡單化,我們在這裡所談的工作將只是執行算術和邏輯運算的工作(arithmetic and logic unit,簡稱 ALU),如將兩個數加在一起。在這一簡化的定義下,CPU 在任何一個時刻均只能執行一件工作而已。

在個人電腦剛出現只能用於一般事物的處理時,CPU 均能非常勝任地完成任務。但電腦圖形和動畫的出現帶來了第一批運算密集型工作負載後,CPU 開始顯示心有餘而力不足:例如電玩動畫需要應用程式處理數以萬計的像素(pixel),每個像素都有自己的顏色、光強度、和運動等, 使得 CPU 根本沒辦法在短時間內完成這些工作。於是出現了主機板上之「顯示插卡」來支援補助 CPU。
最可疑的是當天在場的俱樂部成員尼可斯(Herbert Bishop Nichols),他也是基督科學箴言報(The Christian Science Monitor)的科學編輯。可考的記錄中,他第一個對外提出相關描述,後來被視為吃猛獁象的證據。
