春雨讓夏天的花盛開,但春天的汙染卻是讓水母在夏天繁盛。水母這種季節性地突然數以百計的出現,發生在因為氣候變遷而增溫,或因為過度漁撈而缺少競爭者的水域。科學家研究兩種每年夏天會在美國切薩皮克灣(Chesapeake Bay)大發生的水母,試圖了解水母會如何干擾食物鏈。研究發現,當水母捕食浮游動物(zooplankton)和其他固碳生物時,會將食物轉變成膠狀,且高含碳的分泌物;而一些在一般情況下很少量的細菌,會消化這些分泌物,釋出二氧化碳。水母將水中的碳源移除,會縮減其他生物的食物來源,這項研究成果發表於《美國國家研究院院刊》(Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)。
