亞洲國家中,南韓在全民體育上的用心付出與傑出表現是有目共睹的,不論是棒球、籃球還是跆拳,都是台灣運動員的強勁對手。不過在科學研究上,南韓學者的表現就未必優於台灣學者。2004年1月5日ISI (Institute for Scientific Information)公佈近五年來南韓科學研究成績單,經由這份統計報告,我們將更能了解南韓學者的學術研究表現。
ISI針對電腦科學、物理學、材料科學等二十個領域,統計從1998年到2002年中,來自南韓研究學者(文章中至少有一位作者之地址來自南韓)所發表學術論文佔世界所有學術論文的百分比(Percentage of papers from Japan)及對其研究發現之引用次數與世界平均值進行分析(Relative impact compared to world)。在二十個領域的63,452篇論文中,南韓學者又以材料科學、農業科學與經濟學、商學方面表現最為優異。
就生物醫學領域的論文品質進行分析,台灣學者在藥理學(-33 VS -47)、農業科學(+4 VS -13)、微生物學(-40 VS -54)方面的表現明顯優於南韓學者;至於在免疫學(-53 VS -55)、臨床醫學(-40 VS -43)、神經科學(-47 vs -41)、動植物學(-29 VS -23)、生物學與生物化學(-51 VS -47)、 分子生物學(-55 VS -51)、等領域,南韓與台灣學者的表現非常非常接近,可以預期地,生物醫學領域的競賽將會是下一個科研的主戰場。
值得注意的是,同為亞洲四小龍,深以經濟成就為榮的台灣與南韓,在經濟學、商學領域的研究成就上卻是相差甚遠,南韓學者在此領域的表現確實比我們更為傑出(-18 VS -52),這對經濟產業與南韓高度相似的我們而言,是一大警訊。
