我曾經隨手試了幾次,還沒得到確切結論。不是喇叭被雨淋壞,就是打擊樂聲不夠響亮,播放效果不佳。不過最喜歡古典樂的狗的主人一定會同意我的看法。《他主人的聲音》(His Master’s Voice)畫作裡,那隻歪頭蹲在留聲機前的傑克拉西爾㹴(Jack Russell),就算沒有摸頭和零食的誘惑,肯定也會愛上 B 小調的彌撒曲。
紀錄片《駱駝駱駝不要哭》(The Story of the Weeping Camel)述說蒙古一隻駱駝媽媽原本不願餵養親生的小駱駝,後來一位琴師為牠拉了一首蒙古古調,深深陶醉在樂聲中的駱駝媽媽立刻開心起來,這才願意重新擔任母親的角色,讓小駱駝吃奶。
樂聲代表世間萬物運行的常理,這世界包括駱駝在內,都是和歌而行。音樂就像去顫器,輕柔地觸擊世界,將世界拉回節奏韻律上。流傳千古的音樂、文學和任何偉大的事物之所以偉大,是因為它們全都由最基本的元素組成。上至國王,下至百姓,甚至獾和樹鶯,都聽得懂這種基礎原理。我說要放 B 小調彌撒曲給獾聽,就是為了主張這個信念,而且牠們真的會專心聽。
