當奈米科技的技術不斷地突破時﹐部份科學家就已經開始在構想奈米尺度的” 微型機器人” 。若是這個構想能夠實現﹐其用途將相當廣泛﹐從奈米感應器﹑生物科技﹑生化毒物偵測﹑到污染物濃度的監測﹐都是可以應用的範圍。在即將出版的九月份Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences﹐加州州立大學聖地牙哥分校化學系的Michael Sailor與其研究生Jamie Link﹐就發表了他們製造出稱為“智慧灰塵“(smart dust)﹑可以進行自我組合﹑具選擇性偵測作用的矽顆粒。
